If you remember Italia ‘90 then you will definitely remember Ciao.
The cheeky mascot was the face of the World Cup, every bit as exciting as Schillaci’s goals, Gascoigne’s tears and the Cameroon players kicking absolute lumps out of Argentina.
But a lot has happened in the past 28 years.
So what became of the memorable red, white and green chap with a football for a head?
After Germany lifted the trophy, Ciao revelled in his new-found fame.
He swiftly became a regular on the chat show circuit and Rome party scene, dating a string of supermodels and pop stars.
But the celebrity lifestyle took its toll, Ciao’s life becoming a downward spiral of cocaine, alcohol and Kinder Eggs.
It was his good friend Pique, the Mexico ‘86 mascot, who convinced Ciao to seek help for his addictions, following an unsavory late-night incident in a layby.
After getting clean, Ciao launched a comeback, appearing in the Italian version of Celebrity Big Brother in 2011.
Unfortunately, he now suffers from chronic arthritis, recently retiring to a small fishing village on the Amalfi coast where he lives as a recluse.
